Basic Toxicology Service

Test Code: T50

The T50 Basic Toxicology Service is a combination of targeted Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) screening with UHPLC-MS/MS quantitative confirmation of positive analytes. This package includes quantification of > 70 common, illicit, and novel drugs and can be used to aid in determination of cause of death where there is suspicion of toxicity from controlled substances. This service includes quantification of volatiles.

Methodology

Screening

Ultra-High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC) coupled to Triple Quadrupole tandem Mass Spectrometry (QqQ MS/MS) and 2-column Headspace Gas Chromatography coupled to flame ionization diction (HS-GC-FID).

Confirmation

UHPLC-MS/MS confirmatory, quantitative methods and 2-column Headspace Gas Chromatography coupled to flame ionization diction (HS-GC-FID).

Assay Availability

Screening for this assay is setup Mon., Wed., and Fri. while quantitative confirmations are run Mon-Fri.

Results Reported

Typically, ≤ 4 business days from receipt for negative reports. For positive, quantitative reports ≤ 8 business days TAT from receipt.

Acceptable Matrices

Whole Blood; 2 x 4 mL Sodium Fluoride (grey top; preferred) or EDTA (purple top) tubes. Any non-retrievable specimen will be considered.

Storage

Stored at 4oC until testing is completed. Long term storage of samples (1 year) is stored at -20oC.

Causes for Rejection

  • Identifiers on the specimen DO NOT match, when compared with the requisition.
  • Specimen handling has compromised the integrity of the specimen (e.g., not stored, or prepared according to testing requirements; frozen specimens and specimens fixed/processed in alternative fixatives)
  • Specimen quality is compromised at or beyond ability to complete testing and provide accurate results (i.e., quality not sufficient [QNS]).
  • Serum-separated specimens.
